Navigating Office Politics:
Feng Shui Tips to Stay Protected & In Control
by Uncle Lim

The corporate world can feel like a bit of a battlefield – office politics, gossip, the occasional colleague who doesn’t have your back. It’s something most people deal with at some point, and it helps to approach it from two angles: how you handle people, and how you manage the energy around you.
If you find yourself on the receiving end of jealousy or caught up in rumours, the first thing is not to take it too personally. Most of the time, it says more about the other person than it does about you. Often, it comes from insecurity or feeling threatened.
Stay professional. Keep a clear record of your work and your contributions. Let your actions speak for themselves.
But there are times when, even when you’re doing everything right, the environment still feels uncomfortable. When that happens, it’s worth looking at your feng shui. Small shifts in your surroundings can make a real difference, helping to ease the energy and bring things back into balance.
One of the simplest ways to protect yourself from negative people is to carry the right symbols. Aida, one of my customers, swears by the HRIH pendant. She was dealing with someone particularly difficult and had tried all the usual ways to keep her distance, but nothing really worked. It was only after she started wearing the Golden HRIH pendant that things began to get better. The situation didn’t escalate anymore, and the tension gradually faded.
HRIH is the seed syllable of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion. Worn around your neck or close to the heart, it doesn’t just protect, it softens the energy around you. And that is the key. In situations filled with hostility or tension, it is often compassion that disarms. When you project calm and kindness, it changes how others respond – often before anything even happens.
TIP 1: Mastering Your Personal Space
Your desk is your command centre. If things feel off at work, check your sitting direction.
- Use a compass to find your Nien Yen direction based on your Kua number. Face this direction when answering the phone or when working on important tasks.
- Never sit with your back to a door. This can leave you vulnerable to “backstabbing”.
- Never share a wall where the toilet is on the other side. This will drain your success energy.
- Look out for “poison arrows” or sharp corners of furniture pointing at you. These can bring obstacles.
- Avoid sitting under overhead beams which can cause stress and headaches.
TIP 2: Harness the Power of the Rooster
For office politics, nothing beats the Anti-Conflict Rooster. But don’t just use any Rooster; you need one that looks fierce and has strong talons to claw away the hostile energies. Place it on your desk facing outwards. The Rooster keeps quarrelsome energy in check and stops situations from escalating. Ours comes with the Anti-Conflict Amulet and Double Dorje, which strengthens its effect.

TIP 3: Keep the Immortal Cicada Close
If you feel like you can’t trust those around you, consider the Cicada. This is a very powerful symbol that keeps away unfaithful friends and enemies. In Chinese culture, the cicada has long been associated with protection, especially against gossip, betrayal and people who don’t mean well. A jade cicada is often preferred, but a brass one will work just as well. Keep it on your desk or wear it if you like. It will help you stay clear of unnecessary drama and be less affected by difficult people.
TIP 4: Activate Career Advancement
When the environment feels tense, it helps to focus on building your own momentum rather than getting pulled into unnecessary drama. One way to do this is by activating your career luck. To do this, place a Dragon Tortoise on your desk, ideally in the front right corner.
At the same time, it is important to keep conflict energy under control. In 2026, the Quarrelsome Star 3 sits in the West, so placing a Pair of Harmony Apples in this corner of your office or desk will help calm tensions and reduce the likelihood of arguments.
The idea is simple. Stay focused on your own path while keeping the surrounding energy balanced and supportive.
TIP 5: Wear Portable Protection
For those who are constantly on the move, it helps to have something you can carry with you. These wearable pieces keep the energy around you steady wherever you go.
The Blue Hues Sacred Protection Shawl: designed to shield against conflict, jealousy and negative intent, while keeping your energy calm and protected.- The Hot Air Balloon Scarf: a reminder to rise above situations. It helps lift your mood, clear your mind and attract kinder, more supportive interactions.
You don’t need to overthink how to use them. Tie them onto your handbag, slip them into a jacket or shirt pocket, or carry them with you through the day.If you’re keeping them in a pants pocket, use the front pocket – simply to avoid sitting on the symbols.
TIP 6: Balance the Energy in Your Workspace
If you want things to flow better at work, pay attention to how the energy is distributed around your space. A few small adjustments can make a real difference.
- South (Recognition & Visibility): Activate this area if you want to be seen and acknowledged. Place imagery like the 100 Birds or the Trinity of Horses Good lighting also helps; it naturally draws attention your way and boosts your presence.
- Centre (Relationships & Team Dynamics): Keep the centre of your space calm and harmonious. The Trinity of Apples works well here, helping to smooth interactions and create better understanding between you and the people you work with.
- North (Career & Progress): This is your career corner. Placing the Dragon Among All Men here strengthens confidence, courage and your ability to step up when it matters. It supports recognition and helps you move forward with authority.

You don’t need to do everything at once. Even one or two well-placed activations can shift how things feel — and how others respond to you.
TIP 7: Use a Mirror as Your Shield
Mirrors have long been used in feng shui for protection and clearing negative energy. They don’t just reflect what you see, they reflect what is directed at you.If you find yourself dealing with difficult people or tense situations at work, carrying a small mirror can be surprisingly helpful. It acts to deflect negative intentions, without you having to engage.
A compact mirror with protective symbolism, like a mandala or evil eye design, works especially well. Keep it with you, and when you sense negativity from someone, simply hold it or have it facing outward. The idea is not to confront, but to reflect the energy away from you. It’s a simple tool, but in the right moments, it can make all the difference.
TIP 8: A Note to Leaders
If you’re in a position of authority, you set the tone. Many workplace tensions can be avoided simply by how the space is arranged.
Start with desk placement. Avoid having staff sit directly facing each other; this tends to create unnecessary pressure and competition. A slight angle or staggered layout softens the energy and encourages better collaboration.
It’s also worth paying attention to direction. When people sit facing a direction that suits them, they tend to think more clearly, communicate better and feel more at ease. Small adjustments here can make a noticeable difference to overall morale and productivity.
Office politics may be part of working life, but they don’t have to dominate it. When the environment is right, things run more smoothly. People get along better, and progress comes more naturally.Focus on creating that balance and the rest will follow.
