The bedroom is regarded one of the more important rooms of the household as it is epitomizes one’s personal sanctuary and a place to recharge and revitalize for the following day. Therefore it is important to lay out the room such that it is beneficial to the space provided. Regardless of size of room, here are some handy tips to use when designing your bedroom.
TIP 1 Be Mindful of Bed Location
One of the main elements contributing to auspicious bedroom design is the location of the bed. A few factors to look out for include the orientation and actual location.
By orientation, I mean you should check that the headboard of the bed is pointed towards one of your favourable facing directions based on your date of birth. Stand by the end of the bed, use a compass and take the direction facing the bed headboard. For young couples wishing to expand their family, the best direction to face would be the husband’s Nien Yen direction. For students, try and have the head pointed towards the Fu Wei direction. For general well being and good health, tap your Tien Yi direction.
By location, I mean you should locate the bed deep within the bedroom. The best is a location diagonal to the entrance to the bedroom, allowing the bed area to form its own privacy zone in a corner. By doing so, the bed is placed in a position that it is not in direct line of the bedroom doors. Also ensure the bed is not aligned with a wall where the other side is the WC.
TIP 2 Orientate Your Reading Table Correctly
For those who need to work from the bedroom, one of the few aspects to look out for is the working direction and how the table is placed in relation to the architecture of the room.
Try to face one of your auspicious directions; but in some cases, the table facing direction may not be suitable for you. In such events, angle your computer screen at 45° to your left or right and check if either side falls within one of your auspicious directions.
In a situation where space is tight, avoid sitting facing or with your back to the door. Rather, sit where your actual sitting position is off center from the door. In this case, while the bedroom door opens in direct line of sight to the study table, the actual sitting position is off center with the door. In the unavoidable event where the door opens directly to your sitting or sleeping position, consider the use of fabric door curtains as a medium to visually ‘hide’ the door, to prevent this visual poison arrow.
The other factor to look out for is the placement of the reading table vis a vis the adjacent toilet. If you have to share the same wall as the bathroom toilet, make sure the actual location of the water closet and drainage utilities are placed on the furthest wall so you don’t share it with the wall you are facing while you work.
TIP 3 Be Careful with Furniture Design in the Bedroom
While it is not ideal to have a TV facing the bed as it promotes infidelity, there are situations where this cannot be avoided. In such scenarios, be sure to install a non-reflective TV screen so the actual reflection of the bed is blurred out and rendered indescribable. The next option is to install a built-in cabinet to fully cover the TV screen when not in use, to totally hide any forms of reflective surfaces facing the bed.
The other furniture to bring detail to is the design of the bed. With the many designs available to you, choose a bed that is deemed auspicious. Make sure the bed you choose either has a solid base or is made or a solid frame construction so it does not shake or move when in use. A bed that shakes or looks flimsy doesn’t offer support in your life and may well reflect on your luck. A solid bed symbolizes a bed of success. There is also a belief that the bigger the bed, the better. But this only works when it is one single big bed, not two smaller beds pulled together to pretend to be one big bed.
TIP 4 How to Expand the Room when Short on Space
For rooms that are tight on space, there are a few design techniques that can expand the visual appearance of the room to give it a sense of spatial freedom. This prevents the room from getting a cluttered feel, and also helps maintain a sense of freedom and abundance in space.
First, keep the design as simple as possible. Avoid ornate designs as this creates too much disturbance in the room décor and can cause too much yang activity in the bedroom. The bedroom should be a place of rest so the design should reflect this mood setting. Another consideration is to use light coloured tones to brighten up the room. Dark colours tend to absorb light creating a subdued effect, while light coloured tones bring a burst of vibrancy to the space.
Second, use a broad low bed rather than a high bed design. By lowering the visual perspective of the bed in relation to the room, it gives the room a more spacious feel. When you have a tight-spaced room, a high level bed accentuates this limitation.
Third, consider using full height glass door or window panels to allow maximum natural light to enter the room. This allows natural sunlight to brighten the room creating a vibrant airy atmosphere, but also allowing the interior of the room to connect with the exterior, thus expanding the visual aspect.
Finally, a secondary window panel can be introduced to enhance the lighting of the room. In this scenario, the frosted glass panel is placed at a high level to allow a diffused light scheme to fuse through the room but also high enough to allow a solid wall backing behind the bed. Always have a solid wall behind the bed for solid support while you sleep.
