Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated annually on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. In 2026, it falls on September 25th.
On this day, family members return home for a Reunion Dinner (Tuan Yuan Fan). They enjoy round fruits like pomelos and pomegranates, sip osmanthus tea or wine and light colourful lanterns after dark. Another popular tradition is the sharing of mooncakes (Yue Bing); round baked pastries with sweet or savoury fillings that symbolise family unity and togetherness.
But Mid-Autumn Festival is also a fabulous time to activate love and romance luck, as it is closely tied to the legend of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess. After consuming an elixir of immortality to safeguard it from a thief, Chang’e ascended to the moon, separating her forever from her beloved husband, the archer, Hou Yi. Deeply grieving, Hou Yi made offerings of her favourite fruits and cakes in his garden under the full moon; a practice that grew into the lunar worship customs observed today.
The night is also linked to Yue Lao, the Old Man under the Moon, the matchmaking deity who is said to bind destined couples together with an invisible red thread. Mid-Autumn is traditionally regarded as Yue Lao’s birthday, adding to the romantic energy surrounding the festival. Singles can call on his help to attract a suitable life partner, while couples can use the occasion to renew their devotion and deepen their connection.

- The “Moonlight Stroll” (Zou Yue): Walk hand-in-hand over a bridge or down a moonlit path after dinner. Crossing a body of water as a pair under the full harvest moon symbolizes overcoming obstacles and growing in life together.
- Pairing the Red Ribbon: Tie a single red ribbon around a potted osmanthus or flowering plant in your home to symbolize a sweet and resilient relationship that blooms continually.
