CELCOM (M) Bhd is confident of doubling its third generation (3G) subscriber base to 40,000 from 20,000 by year-end, said chief executive officer Datuk Shazalli Ramly.

"We are quite confident of ending the year at the 40,000 mark," he told reporters after launching Celcom's latest 3G offering, World of Feng Shui, in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Celcom expects the latest offering to attract a larger Chinese subscriber base, especially with Chinese New Year approaching. "We hope World of Feng Shui will reach out to our Chinese customer base," Shazalli said, adding that the latest offering was attractive to new subscribers because feng shui was a growing science practised by many avid followers.

He said the company could expedite the use of 3G by delivering quality content and bolster the take-up rate by reducing the price of its 3G phones.

Celcom, he said, intended to become the largest 3G content provider by March 2006. "We want to have more channels than any other provider in the country."

Shazalli said the company had studied the demographic trends of consumers and would ensure that the 3G content would be relevant to consumers. Celcom aims to offer 50 channels, compared with the current 40, for its 3G platform by year-end.

All major cities without 3G would have coverage by the end of the first quarter next year, he added.
