I am a little confused - and this is probably a silly question. BUT, I know in Australia the north and south aspects are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere, but is east (where the sun rises) and west (where the sun sets) universal - or does the Lo Shu square move around as a whole so that east and west are opposites also in the different hemispheres? Any help would be appreciated so that I can apply important cures correctly.
This is perhaps the most hotly debated subject in contemporary feng shui.
There are strong arguments for leaving the lou shu as it is (li is South).
There are also strong arguments for reversing it (li is North).
All you can do is learn how your house "works" and see which arrrangement produces the most accurate predictions. Then use what you have learned.
Trial and error, I'm afraid
Don't despair. The situation may not be nearly as bad as you think.
Use your compass to find the directions. The position of North & South do not change. Go to the home page, left side and look for Feng Shui information for your country. this will give you a lot of information and answer your questions.
