China Under One Roof in Belgium

WOFS Belgium organized a trip to the Royal Museum for Art and History in Brussels recently. The purpose was to visit the special architectural exhibition, called "China under One Roof" (La Chine sous toit / Onder dak in China). The art works were lent to the western world for the very first time by the HenanMuseum in Zhengzhou (Northern China).

The exhibition covered 3 periods:

  • The Han (2nd century b.J.C.-3rd century a.J.C.), with maquettes going from simple houses to large residences and even theatres.
  • The religious, Buddhist architecture (6th-11th centuries a.J.C.).
  • The large residential houses (15th-16th century a.J.C.).

It was during those times when the Chinese culture preserved the deceased social status by burying the dead with statues of their servants and work animals (cf. the terracotta army of the Emperor Qin Shi Huangda in Xi'-an).

In the exhibition were scaled models of farms, pig units, latrines, mills, water wells, pagodas, and towers reaching almost 2 meters high. The miniatures were made from terracotta, stone or wood and decorated in the style of that era. There was also a section with authentic roof tiles decorated with dragons, chi lins, fu dogs and other auspicious details. Wall hangings carved with intricate patterns indicating stories as well as auspicious symbols were also part of the exhibition.
