First WOFS boutique opened its doors on the auspicious date of Friday, November 25th 2005 during a Grand Opening weekend. We had the chance and pleasure to welcome Lynn Gerkens-Lim, our colleague from WOFS Netherlands, and her mom, who came to help us out for the opening ceremony.

The journey began with a space clearing session before the actual opening hours of the bookshop. Many guests were already present and wondering what was hidden behind the golden and burgundy sleeves hiding the WOFS dragon-logo. At the auspicious time of 3.00 pm, the official ceremony started.

Johann and I were invited by Lynn to cut the cordon. We invited our guests in, offering them belgian chocolates packed in gold and red. In the meantime, Lynn continued the space clearing-ceremony with a singing bowl and ringing bell. Some people still were wondering what was hidden behind the drapes. After a little speech, we  unveiled the logo to ‘wake the dragon’.

A wish fulfilling balloon-releasing ceremony was also organised where guests were offered gold and red balloons to write their wishes on. Everyone went on the streets and released the balloons sending the wishes to the sky dragons hoping they would realise them. If only you had seen the faces of the Belgians not used to such ceremonies !

Guests re-entering the boutique were then offered something to drink (hot sugered tea or a glass of fine champagne) and a welcome gift in the form of an ang pow-envelope together with discount-coupons inside.

It was a memorable day where we had the chance to meet extraordinary people (Lynn, Lynn’s mother, the representative of the city’s mayor, the head of the publicity-department from a local newspaper,…). Even if the weather gods weren’t with us (a snow-storm covered Brussels under a snowy carpet during the night from Friday to Saturday) we had the pleasure to welcome more than 150 guests during the opening weekend.
